- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine what keeps an abused woman in a violent relationship and what further on causes her to leave the relationship. I have explored the questions through a qualitative method by analyzing podsections from women with experience of abuse. The results have mainly been analyzed through Thomas J Scheff's theory about social interaction and Helen Rose Fuchs Ebaugh theory about the exit process, but also from previous research.
The results of the study showed that the women mainly stayed in the relationship because they felt connected to the perpetrator. An environment that does not support the abused woman has also been shown to be a factor as to why an abused woman does not leave a violent relationship. In... The results of the study showed that the women mainly stayed in the relationship because they felt connected to the perpetrator. An environment that does not support the abused woman has also been shown to be a factor as to why an abused woman does not leave a violent relationship. In addition, it seemed that the women largely withdrew from their surroundings to avoid feelings of shame and guilt from the perpetrator. Further factors that contributed to the women staying in the violent relationship were experiences of power, control and insecurity. The vast majority of women in this study described a negative self-image that the perpetrator of violence strategically exploited. The results made it clear that there was mainly a turning point in the form of a triggering event that finally caused the woman to leave the violent relationship. (Less)
