- Victim of a perpetrator´s desires - A qualitative study of how women and girls who have been murdered and raped or murdered on basis of sexual motives are portrayed in the Swedish news press.
The aim of this study was to examine how women and girls who have been murdered and raped or murdered on basis of sexual motives are portrayed in swedish newspress. 75 articles have been studied. My choice of studying how women and girls are portrayed by the newspapers was made on the basis of how women´s and girl´s situation of today's society is. Women and girls are still viewed as an exposed and vulnerable group of society and have, historically been viewed as objects, subordinated men. The aim of this study was to examine how women and girls who have been murdered and raped or murdered on basis of sexual motives are portrayed in swedish newspress. 75 articles have been studied. My choice of studying how women and girls are portrayed by the newspapers was made on the basis of how women´s and girl´s situation of today's society is. Women and girls are still viewed as an exposed and vulnerable group of society and have, historically been viewed as objects, subordinated men. The newspapers included in this study were Aftonbladet, Expressen and Metro. The scientific method used was qualitative content analysis, with which I found themes grounded on sexualization and objectification of the female victims. The study implies that no considerable change has been made in the latest decades in terms of media portrayal of women and girls. One interesting aspect of the result of the study though, was that some kind of nuances emerged in the newspapers´ portrayal of women and girls. These nuances emerging in the articles written in latter years consist of a focus which are more addressed to words and concepts of more neutral character in media’s descriptions and portrayals of the female victims.
