Developing a modular tool for design flexibility

- Abstract
- This report depicts the design development of a modular tool used in the creasing process of packaging material. The aim of the new design is to decrease the setup time while at the same time increase the degree of customization to create new packaging designs for small series production which is difficult with the current tool. Multiple design concepts for the new tool were generated from exploring different locking mechanisms and modular solutions. Due to limitations of high dimension precision and shape stability a modular solution with an insert containing the creasing pattern and a base plate mounted with screws is chosen. When changing the creasing pattern design only the insert is substituted while the base plate remains mounted to... (More)
- This report depicts the design development of a modular tool used in the creasing process of packaging material. When changing the creasing pattern design only the insert is substituted while the base plate remains mounted to the creasing roller.
The base plate is mounted with three screws to the creasing roller while the insert is fastened to both the base plate and the roller with four screws. Additional features of the new design include dowel pins on the base plate for high location precision of the insert and notches for easy removal of the insert. Furthermore, the base plate is manufactured in aluminium to improve the shape stability while the insert is produced in polyamide to allow a quicker manufacturing time. Future work include investigating more suitable materials for the designs, developing a step by step process for manufacturing the inserts and creating a business case with a cost calculation for the implementation of the project.
