Abstract
This research studies a recently launched Hazara movement - Jonbesh-e Roshanayi. It takes an insider’s perspective, investigating how four of the leading figures in Jonbesh-e Roshanayi reflect the motives and approaches of the movement. This thesis applies a thematic analysis to the data I collected from four movement leaders’ personal Facebook accounts and websites. Through a framework combining a constructivist ethnic theoretical lens and a social movement theory, the research explores the leaders’ perceptions of the movement’s motives. Social oppression along ethnic lines reinforces Hazara identity leading to the creation of Jonbesh-e Roshanayi, which aims to fight against the insecurity and social oppression of Hazaras. The research explores the leaders’ perceptions of the movement’s approaches using a social movement theory. Jonbesh-e Roshanayi’s approaches are a reaction to other social and political actors. The leaders declare that the movement does not have a relationship with Iran and that it is a “peaceful movement”, inclusive, and willing to participate in Afghanistan’s current political system. However, in the face of security threats, the leaders started to reconsider their movement’s approaches and expressed their support for Hazaras’ armed self-defense. By employing concepts from postcolonialist critiques of international relations theory, this research also discusses how the movement’s approaches are conditioned by the significant influence of foreign interventions and domestic conflicts.
