Abstract
This Master’s thesis deals with the representation of the Sami people in two swedish regional archives in archival material from the 20th century until now. In the content analysis, I notice if the archive holder belongs to the Sami minority or not, in which context the Sami minority appears in the archives, and to which extent the negative label ”lapp” appears. I have examined 255 volumes in Nationell Arkivdatabas (National Archival Database). The material constitutes of 162 volumes from the Regional Archives in Härnösand and 93 volumes from the Regional Archives in Östersund.

I have examined 255 volumes in Nationell Arkivdatabas (National Archival Database). The material constitutes of 162 volumes from the Regional Archives in Härnösand and 93 volumes from the Regional Archives in Östersund.
The thesis is mainly grounded in a postcolonial theoretical framework. I primarily focus on the subaltern theory and Avril Bell’s settler imaginary to analyse the material. In addition, I use postmodern archival theory to see power structures in the archives and to highlight the archivist as co-creator of history.
The study concludes that the Sami people are represented from the majority society’s view in regional archives. No archive holder in the study belonged to the Sami minority. The study also shows that the material related to the Sami people is quite homogenised and concerns mainly the Lapp administration and reindeer holding. These categories reflect the majority society's view on the Sami. Furthermore, I conclude that the negative label ”lapp” is used in 52,5 percent of the examined material. (Less)
