- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine the Lessons Learned process used in the Swedish Navy and to identify which factors impacts the process of turning Lessons Identified into Lessons Learned in a positive or negative way. Qualitative methods were used, collecting data from three naval units through open interviews. Four established theories have been used throughout this study. Firstly as the basis for finding general factors, thereafter operationalized to support data gathering and finally to provide the framework for the analysis of the results.

Qualitative methods were used, collecting data from three naval units through open interviews. Four established theories have been used throughout this study. Firstly as the basis for finding general factors, thereafter operationalized to support data gathering and finally to provide the framework for the analysis of the results.
The results showed that participating units considered themselves to have the mandates needed to turn Lessons Identified, into Lessons Learned. The implementations that were made, were all needed and useful. The study also showed that the process was not prioritized, due to lack of time and personnel. More involvement from leaders or demand for outcomes, could probably have improved the prioritization. The Lessons Learned process lacks a common vision, it is the receiver of the Lessons Learned who makes the decision if, what and how to apply the content. The role of the Lessons Learned process must be better defined, if the objective is more than being a solitary process collecting Lessons Identified (Less)
