- Abstract
- This study aims to first of all investigate the different strategies the Baltic states have employed in order to protect themselves from russian disinformation channeled through digital media. Second, it aims to apply the theory of containment strategy on the empirical cases in order to determine if this theory is a relevant way of depicting modern defence against disinformation. After describing the background of russian disinformation in the Baltic states, the study moves on to extract a model of analysis from the original and modern versions of containment theory. This is later used to probe the three countries and therein recognize the measures taken on a national level. In the analysis section, these measures are categorized as... (More)
- This study aims to first of all investigate the different strategies the Baltic states have employed in order to protect themselves from russian disinformation channeled through digital media. In the analysis section, these measures are categorized as follows: measures to bolster internal resilience, measures taken to improve the media landscape, and lastly, measures taken to isolate/penalize channels of desinformation. With the help of these categories, the study juxtaposes containment strategy with democratic principles, and introduces a model to illustrate this. The study concludes by describing the countries strategies and highlights the differences in the measures taken in the Baltics. It also concludes that containment strategy is a theory of yesterday that can, with some additions, help us describe the defence against disinformation of today. (Less)
