Abstract
Media has continuously been criticized for covering rape according to unfashionable rape myths. Previous studies have stated that Swedish media coverage of female rape victims have invoked several of such myths. With this as a point of departure, this feminist influenced paper investigates whether Swedish newspapers, specifically Dagens Nyheter and Expressen, have changed their portrayal of female rape victims as a result of the law amendment which was settled in 2018 regarding sexual assaults. By a critical discourse analysis of forty news articles this study suggests that the newspapers have indeed changed their discourse regarding rape. Female victims of rape are no longer blamed for sexual assaults to the same extent. However, as women persistently are presented in the media as victims it is possible that power- and gender structures in society are contained. Therefore, media needs to evolve the discourse of rape further in order to oppose societal structures and simultaneously to be an active actor in the prevention of rape. (Less)
