Abstract
Iran and Saudi Arabia have major impact in the Middle East and their bitter rivalry has led to multiple proxy wars in the area. The Middle East has experienced multiple conflicts throughout the years, especially Yemen. Iran and Saudi Arabia’ involvement intensified with the “Arab Spring” and have made the situation more complex. The overarching purpose of this study is to understand the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as how it has influenced the proxy war in Yemen. A case study with a theory consuming character will be conducted, where the case is central and takes an explanatory approach. Iran and Saudi Arabia have major impact in the Middle East and their bitter rivalry has led to multiple proxy wars in the area. The Middle East has experienced multiple conflicts throughout the years, especially Yemen. Iran and Saudi Arabia’ involvement intensified with the “Arab Spring” and have made the situation more complex. The overarching purpose of this study is to understand the rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as how it has influenced the proxy war in Yemen. A case study with a theory consuming character will be conducted, where the case is central and takes an explanatory approach. In conclusion, Iran and Saudi Arabia are both representatives of Islam and are actively trying to strengthen their power by allying themselves with parties that share the same beliefs. Both countries are using religion as a power instrument to achieve regional hegemony. The religious identity has in fact intensified the rivalry between these countries and is not only used as an instrument to gain diplomatic as well as strategic interests in the Middle East. (Less)
