Abstract
In previous research it has been accentuated that Swedish mass media has not produced mirrored images of war and genocide. Based on previous research this thesis seeks to analyze whether this corresponds with three events during the genocide in Srebrenica. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Svenska Dagbladet has formed and portrayed three events in relation to the public and what their purpose with the portrayal has been. In previous research it has been accentuated that Swedish mass media has not produced mirrored images of war and genocide. Based on previous research this thesis seeks to analyze whether this corresponds with three events during the genocide in Srebrenica. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Svenska Dagbladet has formed and portrayed three events in relation to the public and what their purpose with the portrayal has been. Also, whether it prevails a discrepancy between the image of newspapers portrays in comparison to surviving witnesses. This study reviews in total three published news articles from Svenska Dagbladet regarding the genocide, which is further compared to the interview material from three respondents. Furthermore, the empirical findings are a result of the gathered material. This thesis conducts a qualitative content analysis, and uses Lundgren’ mass media rhetorical analysis model to analyze the framing theory in order to answer the questions of this study. In conclusion, Svenska Dagbladet has portrayed the events by using charged words, which leads to the assumption that their intention was to touch the public. Furthermore, the empirical findings that have been found contradicts previous research, which state that news does not reflect reality. (Less)
