Abstract (Swedish)
The aim of this study is to broaden the knowledge about the correlation between proportional electoral systems and economic equality developed by earlier research. The study has identified a case of interest in New Zealand due to its electoral reform from a majoritarian first-past-the-post system to a system of mixed member proportional representation in 1996. This case gives the opportunity to not only study differences in conomic equality between states with different electoral systems but also to study the impact of the reform. This is done using the Synthetic Control Method which gives the opportunity to create a New Zealand case without electoral reform to use as a comparison unit. The study finds that there is some evidence to... (More)
The aim of this study is to broaden the knowledge about the correlation between proportional electoral systems and economic equality developed by earlier research. The study finds that there is some evidence to believe that the proportional electoral system in New Zealand have effected its within-state economic equality, especially when compared with international trends. These findings are also supported by earlier research and findings on welfare generosity changes. (Less)
