Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Research has shown that some people’s gaming habits lead them to lose control over their gaming and neglect other aspects of their lives. The field however has had issues separating engaged gaming from problematic gaming. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the association between gaming habits, emotion regulation ability, emotion regulation strategies and problematic gaming. Data was collected via an online survey and participants were recruited on social media and online forums. The sample was international and consisted of 2681 gamers aged 16 years or older. An important result was that time spent on gaming-related activities had a similar relationship with problematic gaming as gaming time, a relationship no previous... (More)

An important result was that time spent on gaming-related activities had a similar relationship with problematic gaming as gaming time, a relationship no previous research has examined. The results also showed that the ability to regulate positive emotions had an association with problematic gaming. This effect remained when controlling for the ability to regulate negative emotions. Problematic gaming seems to be characterized by difficulties tolerating emotions and regulating the behavioral aspects of emotions. The emotion regulation strategies distraction and suppression showed the most significant associations with problematic gaming. This study was the first to simultaneously assess emotion regulation ability and emotion regulation strategies’ relationship with problematic gaming. The results indicate that both factors are important in understanding problematic gaming. (Less)
