Abstract (Swedish)
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to explore and create additional and immersed knowledge concerning how archives work with social media, how that affects archivist’s profession and what structures and forces that may lie behind this.
The primary theoretical tool used in this study is neo-institutional theory. A model for studying posts on Instagram, by Russmann and Svensson (2016), and academical studies about work in a digital world with social media, by Gillberg (2018) and Ljungberg (2018), are other theoretical ingredients.

When it comes to methods the main approach is qualitative method and interviews. The interviews have been made in a semi-structured spirit with mostly open questions and broad themes. Three archivists at three archives with different directions and sizes, have been interviewed.
The results show that there are great similarities between how the three archives work with social media. These similarities include the design and content of the posts. The archivists also state that they take an impression from and are inspired by the other archives way of working with social media.
As for the structures and discourses that may cause this, there are tendencies that support the existence of what within the neo-institutional theory are called isomorphism and homogenization. Which, simplified and brief, means that the organizations – in this case the archives – within a certain field strive to emulate each other in order to create increased legitimacy.
In terms of how social media work affects archivists’ profession, this study shows that it tends to make the boundaries between work and leisure more indistinct. To work with social media often seems to mean that employees work outside of regular working hours. This is also something that seems to happen without the employer asking for it. (Less)
