Abstract
To feel self-evident – The Licensing of Hospital Based Social Workers

As of July 1 2019 hospital based social workers can apply for a license - similar to that of doctors and psychologists - which also means that their job title is protected.

The aim of this study was to explore how hospital based social workers within the children and adolescent psychiatric department related to the fact that there is now a license for their job title. The method chosen was qualitative and consisted of semi-structured interviews with seven hospital based social workers working at four different units within the children and adolescents psychiatric department in Sweden.

The interviews were transcribed and coded to make the material more comprehensible. In our analysis we used theories of claims-making, relational claims-making within the organisation and recognition to further the understanding of our material. Our results showed that the role of the hospital based social worker was not always clear to colleagues. This resulted in feelings of being unappreciated and misunderstood for the social workers. The fact that the social workers had years of education and experience and the safety of the patients were used in the construction of their claims. Few felt that their managers had communicated to them and their colleagues the introduction of the licensing, why much of the information stemmed from themselves or fellow social workers within their workplace. The recognition the social workers received was in the form of respect in relation to the seniority of their position rather than their profession as a whole. We found that the claims used by our interviewees were closely linked to recognition. (Less)
