- Abstract
- The research of psychiatry counselors’ work with compulsory care patients is very limited, if not non-existent. The aim of this study was therefore precisely that: to explore psychiatry counselors’ view on their work with compulsory care patients. The main method chosen was a qualitative questionnaire with nine psychiatry counselors from predominantly the regions of Skåne, Stockholm and Västra Götaland. In analysing our results we applied the following theoretical approaches: the therapeutic alliance, theory of profession with Michael Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucracy and the notion of interprofessional team. The study found that the therapeutic alliance is seen as very important in establishing a good relationship with patients... (More)

The study found that the therapeutic alliance is seen as very important in establishing a good relationship with patients and that the counselors’ limited discretion regarding coercion enables a better relationship with the patient. The counselors value their wider perspective which includes social aspects as well as law and legislation, in addition to medical ones. They see this as an advantage in their work within psychiatric care, as the other staff at the workplace do not see the patient from this perspective, while it can at the same time create cultural clashes with the medical approach. This study has therefore attempted to highlight the challenges and opportunities that the psychiatry counselor can face within the work regarding compulsory care patients. The study concludes that more research on this subject is required to contribute with more knowledge about how compulsory care affects the work of the counselor and to open up for insights into how the Swedish compulsory law may actually affect patients.
