Abstract
The state of the environment and human’s impact on the environment has been widely
acknowledged and discussed over the past years. The EU realized there was a need for
environmental regulations and laws in 1972 and in 1993 the environment became an official
part of their politics. The aim of this paper has been to find out whether it is possible to both
increase trade and at the same time decrease the emissions. This study was done on the
exports and carbon dioxide emissions for EU member states and other European countries.
This, to see if the EU with their strong environmental laws and free trade had an impact on
the member states. There is no shortage of theories about trade and the environment, and the
empirical results vary.... (More)

This, to see if the EU with their strong environmental laws and free trade had an impact on
the member states. There is no shortage of theories about trade and the environment, and the
empirical results vary. By using a model for the emissions that is based on previous research
and by using the Gravity model for trade, the results showed that EU-membership has a
positive effect on the carbon dioxide emissions. Regarding exports EU-membership also had
a positive effect but depending on how GDP and GDP per capita was included or not, the EU
had a bigger or lesser impact. The results imply that the EU is not successful in both
increasing exports and decreasing carbon dioxide emissions (Less)
