- Unlike most research on populism and post-democracy that have examined the current politi-cal conjuncture, the aim of this thesis is to understand and explain how populist voters are constructed. To do this, the opinion and cultural pages of Sweden's six largest newspapers are studied during the time of the 2016 United Kingdom European membership referendum and the 2016 United States presidential election. - Unlike most research on populism and post-democracy that have examined the current politi-cal conjuncture, the aim of this thesis is to understand and explain how populist voters are constructed. To do this, the opinion and cultural pages of Sweden's six largest newspapers are studied during the time of the 2016 United Kingdom European membership referendum and the 2016 United States presidential election. In accordance with Michel Foucault's method of problematization, the study is based on a critical perspective on how the Swedish media opin-ion formation constructs the problem of who the populist voters are and why they vote for populists such as Brexit and Trump, but also how this constructions of the problem renders different solutions to how to relate to these voters. Furthermore this study also explores how this constructions relate to and are interlinked with post-democracy. The theoretical frame-work consists of post-Marxist discourse theory and Lacanian psychoanalysis, which together form a set of ontological presumptions, logics, theoretical concepts and methodological guide-lines. The thesis identifies and explains three discursive coalitions based on how their respec-tive problematization relate to post-democratic hegemony. The three coalitions' approach to post-democracy is defined as defence, modification and challenge. The study shows that Swedish media opinion formation is dominated by a defence of post-democracy, which con-sists of constructing the problem that the people who vote for populists are evil and uneducat-ed. In addition, the study aims to theoretically shed light on a neglected connection between hegemony, political logics and anti-populism. (Less)

Detta trots att dessa väljare har stått i centrum för den politiska och mediala debatten i samband med exempelvis den brittiska folkomröst-ningen och det amerikanska presidentvalet. Denna studie undersöker hur man på svenska le-dar- och kultursidor, i samband med den brittiska folkomröstningen och det amerikanska pre-sidentvalet, konstruerar vilka de populistiska väljarna är och förklarar varför de röstar på popu-lister så som Brexit och Trump. Därutöver studeras hur de olika konstruktionerna av väljarna medför olika förslag till hur man ska förhålla sig till dem. Studien syftar till att kritiskt förklara hur de respektive lösningar till hur man ska förhålla sig till de populistiska väljarna också inne-bär olika förhållningssätt till, vad som i denna studie benämns som, den postdemokratiska hegemonin. Studien visar att valen av Brexit och Trump uppfattades som otänkbara. Valen tvingade på detta sätt fram nya förklaringar till vad som hände, varför det hände och hur man ska förhålla sig till det som hände. I detta avseende fungerar, som studien påvisar, konstrukt-ionerna av de populistiska väljarna som förklaringar till att det omöjliga kunde inträffa. Med hjälp av diskursteori och psykoanalytiska teorier identifieras och studeras tre koalitioner, med tre olika sätt för att konstruera de politiska väljarna, inom svensk medial opinionsbildning. De tre koalitionernas förhållningssätt till postdemokratin definieras som försvar, modifiering samt utmaning av postdemokratin. Studien visar avslutningsvis att svensk medial opinionsbildning domineras av ett försvar av postdemokratin. Detta försvar fungerar genom att diskvalificera och demonisera de populistiska väljarna som onda och obildade. (Less)
