Abstract
This thesis examines the resistance created towards the prospects of a mine in the agricultural countryside of Skåne, Sweden. A growing discourse in Swedish media emphasizes mineral extraction as a vital part of a green future due to minerals’ importance for promotion of new modes of energy. At the same time, a resistance has been mobilized against such test drilling in Skåne. Based on anthropological thought and interviews with people involved in the resistance movement, the thesis aims to highlight the complex intersections of nature, culture and identity that condition the resistance. Using a theoretical framework regarding the social embeddedness of mineral extraction, green growth, and the terrains of struggle in capitalistic mining... (More)
This thesis examines the resistance created towards the prospects of a mine in the agricultural countryside of Skåne, Sweden. Using a theoretical framework regarding the social embeddedness of mineral extraction, green growth, and the terrains of struggle in capitalistic mining regimes, the thesis argues that the resistance’ ways of contesting the claims of a green mine, are enwrapped in their relationship to the local environment. The study demonstrates how norms of democracy, domestic food production, ideas of nature and the significance of home, creates a foundation for the resistance. Furthermore, the study shows that the conflict has effected their experience of the local community, where strong social ties has been formed but are being threatened by social fragmentation created by the perceived threat of the mining company.
