Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

Abstract
Since 2017, electric scooters have become an increasingly common means of transportation in urbanized cities across Sweden for cover short mileage. Electric scooters are seen more often in urbanized cities and this can imply a greater sense of danger when the vehicles are driven more frequently in urban traffic environments, thus causing a greater impact on road safety for vulnerable road users. The aim of this dissertation is to study the impacts of electric scooters on the traffic safety’s perspective when the vehicles are driven in an urban environment at a chosen unregulated intersection in Malmö.

The two main methods chosen to conduct for this thesis consists of video analysis and a survey. The video recordings took place at an unregulated intersection in the city of Malmö, to study the speed of the vehicles crossing the intersection and also to examine the behaviors and interactions, which occurred with other vehicles and vulnerable road users. The collected video recordings were analyzed with the help of T-Analyst, a semi-automated tool to analyzed traffic conflicts. A total of 100 detectors have created for all detected electric scooters and the same amount corresponds to 100 electric scooters. Detectors can be defined as a video cut-out from the actual recordings and they are analyzed in regard to the speed, the behaviors, and the interactions between the motorized vehicles (e.g. cars) and other vulnerable road users of electric scooter riders. In order to achieve a comparison study, both the speed measurements, observations, and interactions were assessments for the same number of cyclists. The survey chosen for this thesis has divided into two separate studies, a field survey and a pilot survey. SPSS was used as the main software tool to perform statistical analyzes for the combined answers collected in both studies. Furthermore, a Chi-Square test was also conducted to study if there exist any statistical differences between genders.

The results from the video analysis have shown, that the electric scooters were driven faster than pedestrians on sidewalks and more men kept a speed above the maximum legislative speed of 20 km/h in Sweden. No distinct differences in speed were observed for both electric scooter’s riders and cyclists. The number of ‘‘dangerous’’ interactions occurred only a few times and the results indicated that electric scooters do not pose a grave danger when the vehicles are driven in an urban traffic environment. The results from the survey have also shown that the current state of knowledge was poor and not comprehensive of the public in the cities of Malmö and Lund. (Less)
