Abstract (Swedish)
Resultat... (More)

(Less)
Abstract
This study was aiming to investigate which factors influence individual’s intrinsic motivation for exercise and what their correlation to it was. The factors examined was perceived competence, perceived autonomy, perceived relatedness, appearance motives, effort, fitness motives, average hours spent on exercise, average hours spent working or studying, and general self-efficacy. The study chose to investigate these nine factors based on Self-Determination Theory, Self-Efficacy Theory, and to possibly find easy ways to measure intrinsic motivation for exercise. A survey method was used (N=208). Eighty men, 127 women, and one participant who did not want to report their gender responded to the questionnaire. Results showed significant... (More)

A survey method was used (N=208). Eighty men, 127 women, and one participant who did not want to report their gender responded to the questionnaire. Results showed significant correlations between intrinsic motivation for exercise and all factors except appearance motives for exercise, and average hours per week spent working or studying. Perceived competence, perceived autonomy, perceived relatedness and appearance motives for exercise were all able to significantly predict the variance of intrinsic motivation for exercise in the regression model, adjusted R2 =.66, F(9,196)=45.6, p <.001. Combined with previous research, the results highlight some of the most important factors in predicting levels of intrinsic motivation for exercise, and which factor affects the other. By understanding the relationship between different factors and intrinsic motivation for exercise, interventions can be built to help increase exercise adherence. We recommend that future research look for other factors that could help increase intrinsic motivation for exercise (Less)
