Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate close relatives' experiences of their role as long-term home care givers to a somatically ill partner, to increase the understanding of informal care in society. The method chosen was text analysis of five biographies. In analyzing the results, I applied the following theoretical approaches: Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, Linton’s role theory, and field theory, drawing on Lewin. The analysis highlights that home care giving relatives to ill partners, simultaneously handle multiple roles while also stepping into the shadow due to the focus on the partner and the illness. Furthermore, the study found that these caregivers experience vulnerability in their informal caregiver role –with unceasing... (More)

The analysis highlights that home care giving relatives to ill partners, simultaneously handle multiple roles while also stepping into the shadow due to the focus on the partner and the illness. Furthermore, the study found that these caregivers experience vulnerability in their informal caregiver role –with unceasing worries and responsibilities – and that they risk their physical and mental health due to a general invisibility and lack of social support. The study concludes that relatives as home care givers hold a community-supporting function where social work needs to step in to make the role sustainable. (Less)
