Abstract
The city of Malmö reaches only 2 of its 19 environmental targets and one of the reasons is that the hard surfaces increases in the urban area. There is however a general trend for private house owners to harden their gardens and the city of Malmö has limited actions to address this issue.
One action is to inform the private house owners of the positive effects of vegetation/soft surfaces and rainwater-collecting in their gardens. Since garden-research shows differences for gardens regarding size and house type, and for gardenowners regarding age and gender, information campaigns advantageously can be based on target groups. The aim of the essay was therefore to categorize gardens and gardenowners in Malmö.

Since garden-research shows differences for gardens regarding size and house type, and for gardenowners regarding age and gender, information campaigns advantageously can be based on target groups. The aim of the essay was therefore to categorize gardens and gardenowners in Malmö.
The method was a survey-study in the Malmö-area Gamla Limhamn, in which 100 gardenowners participated. The answers were analysed by first dividing the gardens and the gardenowners into groups, and then identifying results in which one group differed from the others.
The result shows that the trend of hardening in private gardens occurs in Gamla Limhamn and five categories of gardens and gardenowners were identified; 1) Large villa gardens, 2) Small townhouse-gardens, 3) Middle-age women, 4) Passive pensioners, and 5) Active parents. Category 2 and 4 have a low tendency of change while the other categories have high tendencies. Categories 1 and 3 are showing positive intentions for less hard suffices while category 5 could be the most important category to affect.
The five categories, if adopted to target group-adapted campaigns, could improve the opportunities to achieve environmental goals and fight the trend which is changing gardening to “hardening”. Future research is however needed; if other aspects such as identity, escapism and lifestyle factors ought to better be analysed in the local context, and also, to better define what a garden is today. Popular Abstract (Swedish)
Men istället ökar hårdgörandet.

Men istället ökar hårdgörandet.

(Less)
