Refugees in Denmark: When temporality is long lasting
(2020) SOLM02 20201Department of Sociology of Law
- Abstract
- The recent tightening of the Danish Aliens Act in 2019 has brought about an emphasized notion of temporality to temporary residence permits for refugees in Denmark.
Temporality, in the eyes of the Danish government, is a sign to refugees, that their stay in Denmark should only be considered temporary, and that they should one day return to their countries of origin. But for refugees who have no notion of when they can return to their countries of origin, temporality carries the risk of inducing more stress and social distancing. This thesis aims to examine the impact, which the changes to the Danish Aliens Act in 2019, might have had for refugees already residing in Denmark, focusing on the issue of temporality.

As the changes to the law where only implemented in February 2019 and long-term effects are still to be seen, this research serves as an exploratory study and guidance for possible future research priorities. It analyses the answers given by nine Danish refugees in connection with temporality and their temporary residence permits.
The findings illustrate, that while temporary residence permits for refugees might add to more individual uncertainty, it is too early to say whether temporality will lead to refugees returning home as is the objective. (Less)
