Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how turning points manifest themselves during the life course of people that have substance abuse. We collected our data through a qualitative method, by reading four autobiographies written by authors who describe in detail how they encountered substances, and how they managed to turn their life around for the better. The chosen material was written in Swedish and English. In order to answer our questions, we read the material using different themes that were relevant to the process of turning points. By using these themes, we were able to examine the texts and take out the information that was relevant to answer our questions. The themes that we found relevant were positive and negative turning points. Other themes were internal and external factors for the emergence of a turning point. In our result, we analyzed our material through a humanistic psychology perspective and used this approach as our lens to understand the material. Furthermore, we also used different concepts in order to analyze their relevance to the emergence of a turning point. The concepts that were relevant to our study were congruence and incongruence. We restricted this concept by only using it to analyze the author's self-image, and how congruence or incongruence with the self-image affected the emergence of turning points. One of the study's conclusions was that turning point can manifest in different ways, depending on the person in question. Another conclusion was that the self-image is highly relevant to the emergence of turning points, which can be both positive and negative. Several authors revealed that their self-image was both a primary reason behind their engagement with substances and a primary reason for why they were able to achieve crucial turning points in their lives.
