Abstract
Was the romance between David and Jonathan more than brotherly affection? There is an erotic tension between David and Jonathan as described in 1 Sam 20:18 to 2 Sam 1:26, and this thesis aims to examine their relationship using an ideology-critical method. With this method, the analysis will notice prominent ideology behind, in and in front of the biblical text.
Many times, the two men's story is interpreted from the point of view of heteronormative expectations. However, queer theory says otherwise about their relationship - especially in comparison to David's other love relationships in the books of Samuel.
David's homoerotic relationship with Jonathan is of great importance for David's journey towards becoming Israel's king.

In addition, their story is portrayed in a beautiful and uplifting way. The ancient author leaves this erotic romance in the Old Testament for us to read, unchallenged.
David's other sexual relationships, such as with his other wives, have often devastating consequences. Mikal disputes David's so-called indecent behavior and she is punished with never having any children.
In the story of David and Bathsheba, their sexual intercourse becomes a serious offence, which in turn leads to the death of their newborn infant.
Ironically, David's relationship with Avigajil and Jonathan is portrayed by the ancient writers as admirable. In this study, therefore, David's erotic relationships with Jonathan, Mikal, Avigajil and Bathsheba are compared in order to establish that David's relationship with Jonathan is the most significant of them all in the books of Samuel.
