- Det som skildras och berättas inom inom populärkulturen kan ofta spegla vårt moderna samhälles konstruerade syn på kriminalitet och andra former av samhälleliga fenomenen. Seriemördare är i vår tid ett av de största populärkulturella fenomenen men förklaringar till seriemord ges sällan eller på ett förenklat sätt. Är det inte nödvändigt att förstå dessa gärningsmän på ett djupare plan och undersöka vad som kan tänkas ligga bakom deras utveckling mot kriminalitet? Detta är vad den verklighetsbaserade tv-serien Mindhunter centrerar sig kring. - Det som skildras och berättas inom inom populärkulturen kan ofta spegla vårt moderna samhälles konstruerade syn på kriminalitet och andra former av samhälleliga fenomenen. Seriemördare är i vår tid ett av de största populärkulturella fenomenen men förklaringar till seriemord ges sällan eller på ett förenklat sätt. Är det inte nödvändigt att förstå dessa gärningsmän på ett djupare plan och undersöka vad som kan tänkas ligga bakom deras utveckling mot kriminalitet? Detta är vad den verklighetsbaserade tv-serien Mindhunter centrerar sig kring. Serien handlar om ett verklighetsbaserat FBI-team som inleder en intervjustudie med ökända seriemördare, med syfte att utveckla en kriminalpsykologisk profil över potentiella seriemördare. Serien har tydliga anknytningar till både kriminologi och sociologi, från första avsnittet där en central sociologisk fråga betonas: föds människor som kriminella eller formas de till att bli kriminella?
Syftet med uppsatsen är därmed att undersöka följande: Vad är seriens svar på frågan? Vilka teorier om möjliga orsaker till seriemördares kriminalitet presenteras i serien? Detta görs med hjälp av en hermeneutisk innehållsanalys av serien Mindhunter och därefter en analys av hur serien beskriver de intervjuade seriemördare och bakgrunden till de brott de begår ur ett socialkonstruktivistiskt perspektiv och ett genusperspektiv. Resultatet visade på flera vardagliga dimensioner, som kan ha lett till att de intervjuade seriemördare inledde ett avvikande beteende, i form av brist på socialisation, sociala band/självkontroll men även i ett strävan efter fullständig hegemonisk maskulinitet. Analysen visade också på en koppling mellan deras offerval och ett långtgående, misogyn kvinnosyn. (Less) - Abstract

Narratives on serial killers have enjoyed a sharp rise in our collective consciousness in recent years, however exploration of motives for serial killings within these texts have remained largely simplified or seldom explained. The American television show Mindhunter is based on the true-crime book of the same name written by FBI-agent John E. Douglas. Mindhunter attempts to understand serial perpetrators on a deeper level, analysing what might be behind their development towards criminality. Narratives on serial killers have enjoyed a sharp rise in our collective consciousness in recent years, however exploration of motives for serial killings within these texts have remained largely simplified or seldom explained. The American television show Mindhunter is based on the true-crime book of the same name written by FBI-agent John E. Douglas. Mindhunter attempts to understand serial perpetrators on a deeper level, analysing what might be behind their development towards criminality. The show revolves around an FBI team who initiate interviews and studies with notorious serial killers with their intent being to develop criminal profiles for potential serial killers. From the first episode, Mindhunter delves into matters of Sociology and Criminology when it poses the explicit central sociological question: are criminals born or made?
The key aim of this essay is to analyse how Mindhunter seeks to answer this question and the subsequent theories surrounding possible causes of a serial killer’s criminality they present within the show. The method of this study is a hermeneutic content analysis of the series, focusing on interviewed serial killers and the background of the crimes they have committed from a social constructionist and gender perspective. The results show several dimensions which may have led to the interviewed serial killers initiating a deviant behaviour, in the forms of lack of socialisation, social bonds/self-control and the pursuit of constructing a hegemonic masculinity. The study also shows a link between their victim choice and a far-reaching, misogynistic view of women. (Less)
