Abstract
“Between the tracks” builds upon the concept of reclaiming a brownfield. It explores what can happen when industrial activity vacates valuable land in the city center. Through urban recycling, the project unlocks the value of an underutilized railyard and reimagines the last, such a large, and free area in the center of Gdynia in Poland.

In 1926, when the first plan of Gdynia was created, the main urban axis of the city was running West, from the train station, through the design site, to the sea. The rapid development of the port caused the necessity of the reorientation of the original plan. Instead, the site, from now called ”Międzytorze” (eng. verbatim. ”Between the tracks”) became the “dead end” of the iconic city center - Poland's... (More)

The rapid development of the port caused the necessity of the reorientation of the original plan. Instead, the site, from now called ”Międzytorze” (eng. verbatim. ”Between the tracks”) became the “dead end” of the iconic city center - Poland's modernist masterpiece.

The proposal celebrates the site’s industrial identity by providing a strong sense of the public realm that constantly intertwines with omnipresent railway sidings. The main railway siding becomes the heart of the new district and is transformed into linear public space, called the “Track Path”. It gives a space for functions that the city lacks nowadays and harnesses numerous connections to the sites' surroundings, such as the transportation hub - Gdynia Główna Station. On top of that, the design explores different ways of living by the railway tracks - from the block-like typology close to the thriving station area to small-scale, single-family units along abandoned railway tracks.
