- Abstract
- This study examines discourses about hormonal contraceptives from the viewpoint of researchers and professionals within the health care system, and from users of the contraceptives. I explore the cultural constructs of the subject positions (Foucault), the evolving historical view of the female sexuality, and how a power relationship expressed through language (Foucault) influences the relation and balance between the female patient and the health care system. By using Carol Bacchi´s analysis tool ”What´s the problem represented to be?”, I identify key concepts, dichotomies and categories by looking into how discourse can be seen as creating structures for assumptions and meaning. It is not primarily the problem in itself that needs to be explored, but rather the representation of the problem. By deconstructing the presented image of how revolutionary the hormonal contraceptive has been for women´s freedom of choice and control over their own fertility, my conclusion is that the freedom the hormonal contraceptives generated is a gain mainly for the male partner rather than the woman.
