Food for local thought, A study on the dynamics between urban farmers and residents of Malmö

Abstract
Urbanisation is an inevitable part of globalisation. With the globalised food chain in place to feed the growing number of people living in urban areas. A remedy is often expressed to be urban farming, with local, sustainable production of food. This study presents a preliminary assessment of the dynamics between urban farms and residents in Malmö. Urban farms produce available food for the residents of Malmö. The point of departure is that a sustainability goal needs cooperation from different parts of society. Using semi-structured interviews, the findings of this qualitative work appoint to certain contradictions in the main objectives of urban farmers and the priorities of residents when shopping for groceries. The results show that there is a disconnect between farmers and residents, which could diminish the prospect of continuance for urban farms in Malmö. If urban farms cannot become economically sustainable, the perseverance of the farmers might not be enough for the farms to stay in business resulting in a decline in urban farming. (Less)
