Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore LGBTQ+ elders’ experiences and coping strategies from a minority stress perspective. This was done by conducting interviews with ten participants in the age of 62-80 years old who identified as a sexual or gender minority. The data was analysed with thematic analysis which resulted in three main themes: A life in an ever changing context: identifying as LGBTQ+ then and now, A constant calculation: to come out or not in different situations and The social context: the importance of social support and the lack of someone close. The results showed that the participants experienced changes regarding minority stress factors throughout their lives. The participants also described the coming out-process as... (More)

The results showed that the participants experienced changes regarding minority stress factors throughout their lives. The participants also described the coming out-process as a calculation of the opportunities for openness in different situations. Social support from loved ones and the LGBTQ+-community was further described as an important coping mechanism but many participants also described feelings of loneliness. The results of the study also show the importance of specific efforts aimed at LGBTQ+ elders to prevent negative health effects. The study highlights the importance of further research in this topic area. (Less)
