Abstract
The present study aims to investigate the motives behind the culture of silence among young adults in Malmö. Based on the purpose, the study is expected to contribute with knowledge of the police's experience of silence culture among young people and how police officers handle meetings with young people in Malmö who do not want to comment in interrogation situations due to prevailing norms of silence. This study is based on eight interviews, four of the interviewees are young adults living in Malmö and four of the interviewees are police officers working in Malmö. Based on the coding, it appears that the motives behind the culture of silence vary, and are both self-chosen and a result of pressure from other individuals or as a result of... (More)

Based on the coding, it appears that the motives behind the culture of silence vary, and are both self-chosen and a result of pressure from other individuals or as a result of norms. Some statements indicates that there is an underlying fear of being subjected to various reprisals, which has often shown to be one of the main reasons behind the silence in previous research. This can be done through media reporting, or rumor dissemination, which mediates the group's fright capital. In conclusion, the results of my interviews have shown that there are situations where the interviewees prefer to resolve conflicts themselves through an informal law system. Collaboration with police and other judicial authorities is considered a deviation from the norm, instead it appears that several interviewees prefer to have their own settlements in conflict situations. The norm of not talking to police thus affects the judiciary's ability to investigate crimes and convict the guilty. (Less)
