Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Background: In the event of a spinal cord injury, an instant life change occurs where the patient's body function can be affected and therefore also their occupational patterns and occupational identity. The rehab coach has a unique role in the rehabilitation team with their knowledge about living with a disability which complements the team by being a role model with greater opportunity to motivate the patient. Although the rehab coach in several parts of the country is an important profession, they are not a natural part of the team in all spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Although the rehab coach in several parts of the country is an important profession, they are not a natural part of the team in all spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
Purpose: To investigate the role of the rehab coach in the rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury and how the rehab coach supports the patient’s readjustment to new occupational patterns and occupational identity.
Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative approach. Seven semi-structured interviews with people working as rehab coaches and who has gone through a rehabilitation process. The transcribed data were analyzed with a latent content analysis.
Result: During the interpretive analysis of the interviews with the rehab coaches the theme self-experienced rehabilitation emerged, which included the categories: unique relationship, exchange of knowledge and model. The categories in turn had eight subcategories. The identified categories illustrate how the rehab coaches view their role in the interaction with the team and the patient.
Conclusion: The rehab coach has an important role in rehabilitation and the team. By having a self-experienced rehabilitation, the coach has gained unique knowledge about living with a disability, which means that they can be a role model for both the team and the patient. (Less)
