(2020) DIKK60 20201Division of ALM and Digital Cultures
- Abstract
- This study was aimed to explore and describe how international students' presence in physical and digital environments is affected when moving and staying abroad in order to highlight aspects and nuances in life and presence between different environments. To analyze the material, the concept of presence, further explained by the perspectives of disembodiment and disembedding, was used in combination with previous research. As a result, the study provided an insight into the lives of the participating international students... (More)

To analyze the material, the concept of presence, further explained by the perspectives of disembodiment and disembedding, was used in combination with previous research. As a result, the study provided an insight into the lives of the participating international students and showed how their presence navigates between physical and digital environments daily, whereby their digital presence is enhanced by the need to ”be” with close people, especially families, from the previously occupied physical environment (i.e., the home country). Presence in physical environments and presence in digital environments proved to be interconnected and affect each other. Although participants were favored by a digital presence when changes in their physical environment occurred, an intense and even constant presence in digital environments was noted by some participants to have certain disadvantages in relation to their presence in physical environments.
