Billing's views on the calling from the perspective of ecumenical relations and religious dialogue, baptism and Communion and personal responsibility are the focus of this investigation. The method is a substantive idea analysis of Billing's own texts and of secondary literature. The results show that ecumenics is essential for Billing's idea on the calling. At the same time, he has a complex view of other Christian denominations. Ecumenics needs to be broadened with religious dialogue today to make Billing's concept work. Baptism and Communion are regarded in open or boundless ways by Billing, leaving open the question of how Billing's view on the calling can be associated with the folk church in actual sense. The concept of personal responsibility may be a way for the calling to reach out to and recognize people of different groups in the society, and the scattered church is in line with Billing's views on the calling as important as the gathered one. The conclusion, however, is that in our time a clarification of Billing's idea of the calling is required. To be relevant today it also needs to take inclusion as well as an awareness of intersectionality and pluralism into consideration. Its assets are its constant movement in a likewise constant development between church and society and its overall holistic functionality.
