Abstract
Sustainability issues within the fashion market is frequently debated. Especially, whether fast fashion can be considered as sustainable. This bachelor thesis draws on the discussion about fast fashion and sustainability, and how different discourses is being reproduced within different media outlets. By comparing journalistic articles about fast fashion and sustainability from the news media outlet The Guardian and trade media outlet The Business of Fashion; the aim is to investigate the discourses which characterize the media outlets and their portrayal of the fashion market. Sustainability issues within the fashion market is frequently debated. Especially, whether fast fashion can be considered as sustainable. This bachelor thesis draws on the discussion about fast fashion and sustainability, and how different discourses is being reproduced within different media outlets. By comparing journalistic articles about fast fashion and sustainability from the news media outlet The Guardian and trade media outlet The Business of Fashion; the aim is to investigate the discourses which characterize the media outlets and their portrayal of the fashion market. By executing discourse analysis, using the Foucauldian perspective; this thesis show how different concepts and beliefs about the fashion market, fast fashion and sustainability develops through the media outlets and their formation of discourse. With Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of fields, The Business of Fashion is considered to act within the field of the fashion market compared to The Guardian which is positioned outside the field. Consequently, their relation to the field of the fashion market become apparent in their reporting. (Less)
