- Abstract
- This study analyses the processes of constructing masculinity and fatherhood among a sample
of stay-at-home fathers in Turkey. Firstly, social construction of reality theory was used to
describe the construction process of the fathers’ identities. Then, hegemonic masculinity and

Nine semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with fathers who take care of
their child/children in Istanbul. A common pattern revealed in the thematic analysis of the
qualitative data that the fathers in question normalize their identity of being primary
caretakers. Moreover, the interviewed fathers state that certain restraints, such as living in
conservative environments or belonging to a lower socio-economic class, may prevent other
fathers from being an active caretaker like them. Last but not least, the interviewed fathers
are highly motivated to spread the idea of being stay-at-home fathers.
Thus, this study investigates the reported practices and experiences of Turkish stay-at-home
fathers’ by taking into consideration masculinity studies in order to analyse the process of
construction of their masculinity and parenthood identities. (Less)
