Empirical part is based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with women actively engaged in local politics and interviews published under the #НеЦінаПолітики/#NotTheCost campaign and dedicated to experiences of violence faced by women politicians.
It suggests that the discrimination women face is fundamentally ambivalent: while some discriminatory practices can be perceived as “seemingly mild” and others as “blatantly hostile”, they come from the same premise and create the same outcomes supporting women’s subordinate position in politics. And, while such practices mentally hurt women and perpetuate gender inequality in politics, overcoming discrimination empowers women and gives them power to work towards more equal political environment. Theoretical part of this thesis engages socio-psychological persepectives on discrimination as a phenomena. It employs the ambivalent sexism theory stating that sexism is fundamentally ambivalent as it involves both subjectively benevolent and hostile feelings toward women. It also explores the concept of “master suppression techniques” and gives examples of techniques of social manipulation used by men to indirectly suppress and humiliate women and maintain a dominant position in gender hierarchy. Relevant Ukrainian legislation and the data from various reports and surveys is used to outline the bigger picture of the issue of discrimination of women in politics on different levels. Empirical part of the research is based on interviews with women actively engaged in local politics, including interviews conducted by the researcher and interviews published under the #НеЦінаПолітики/#NotTheCost campaign dedicated to experiences of violence faced by women politicians in Ukraine.
The results suggests that the discrimination women face is ambivalent: while some discriminatory practices can be perceived as “seemingly mild” and others as “blatantly hostile”, both these types come from the same premise and create the same outcomes supporting women’s subordinate position in politics. While discriminatory practices mentally hurt women and perpetuate gender inequality in politics, overcoming discrimination empowers women and gives them power to work towards more equal political environment.
