Popular Abstract
Role of SADB Kinase in DNA damage repair

In the everyday life our bodies are exposed to environmental insults, such as the sunlight, which damage our genes. In addition, the cells in our body also face constant threats from within that causes damage to DNA. These damage can lead to alteration in genes and changes to the DNA molecule that can affect its ability to maintain healthiness. Luckily, our body is prepared for the fight against DNA-damage. In response to damage, the DNA repair process becomes active and repairs the damage. When normal repair processes fail, the cell either dies or lead to formation of cancer. In order to develop novel therapeutic regimes, it is important to understand how the DNA preserve healthy state and which... (More)
Role of SADB Kinase in DNA damage repair

In the everyday life our bodies are exposed to environmental insults, such as the sunlight, which damage our genes. In addition, the cells in our body also face constant threats from within that causes damage to DNA. These damage can lead to alteration in genes and changes to the DNA molecule that can affect its ability to maintain healthiness. Luckily, our body is prepared for the fight against DNA-damage. In response to damage, the DNA repair process becomes active and repairs the damage. When normal repair processes fail, the cell either dies or lead to formation of cancer. In order to develop novel therapeutic regimes, it is important to understand how the DNA preserve healthy state and which proteins are defending our DNA against environmental damage.

The DNA repair process involves several proteins including the SADB Kinase. In this project, I study the role of SADB Kinase in DNA-damage repair. I treat the cells with a toxic agent to induce a Double Stranded Break (DSB) in the DNA. Upon introduction of DSB, the survivability of the cells is determined. Also, I subjected the damaged cells to cellular component fractionation. The protein in the fractions are analysed and in this way, to establish a possible link between SADB Kinase and DNA Damage repair mechanisms, we explore the localization of the SADB and of DNA repair proteins such as p53 upon response to DNA damage.

Establishing new molecular targets for developing novel therapeutics is important for the fight against cancer. My preliminary results show that SADB Kinases are one of the DNA-defenders in our body and that preservation of its function may be important for the survival of the damage cells.
