(2020) PSPR14 20202Department of Psychology
- Abstract (Swedish)
Fyra multipla... (More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The purpose of the present study was to examine whether there are connections between preoccupation with diet, and exercise, and four psychological factors: health anxiety, self-esteem, sense of coherence, and body image, since psychological well- being is a broadly used term. Another aim was to examine whether the preoccupation with diet, and exercise differed depending on some specific characteristics of the participants, for example age, living situation and amount of exercise. Data was collected through a digital survey spread on Facebook, where 268 people participated. The results presented weak to moderate significant correlations between both diet preoccupation, and exercise preoccupation with all psychological factors. Four... (More)

Data was collected through a digital survey spread on Facebook, where 268 people participated. The results presented weak to moderate significant correlations between both diet preoccupation, and exercise preoccupation with all psychological factors. Four multiple regression analysis were conducted to investigate if preoccupation with diet and exercise could predict the results of the psychological variables, which showed weak to moderate explained variance. There were significant differences in preoccupation of diet depending on diet, and amount of exercise. Furthermore, there were significant differences in preoccupation of exercise depending on age, living situation, and amount of exercise. A cluster analysis showed that those who were younger and exercised more also had a higher preoccupation with exercise, lower sense of coherence, and poorer body image. The results of the study indicated that exercise, and diet do not exclusively have positive associations for mental health. This is of importance to take into account for health care and other actors who work for health-promoting behaviors in society. Despite significant findings in the study, these should be interpreted with caution due to methodological limitations. (Less)
