Abstract
The aim of this project is to highlight the structural continuity of contemporary mass media, despite the various changes, both technological and in relation to the agents of mass media, that occurred in the last two decades, following the advent of online journalism. The approach that will be pursued is a structural one, not content analysis. To prove the structural continuity, I am relying on system theory, as articulated by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann. To expand his analysis, I am introducing the concepts of approaches of mediation, that are a result of the of the circular, continuous production of information within the social system of mass media. The approaches that will be discussed are the interpretation, the narrative,... (More)

The approaches that will be discussed are the interpretation, the narrative, and self-representation. These concepts are borrowed from other fields, yet system theory is a language that unites various fields of inquiry, thus, as I will argue, these could be applied to the system of mass media as well. The method of the project is largely theoretical analysis of various concepts in relation to each other based on a range of theoreticians who articulated these concepts, but a number of example sections are included as well, where the effects of the approaches of mediation will be showcased. The examples are dealing with transgender representation in contemporary media. Transgender representation, due to its novelty, is effective in highlighting the importance of structural tools that are relatively static and can be applied to new phenomena as well. Furthermore, transgender representation also highlights the interconnected nature of visual culture and mass media, as well as the particular characteristic of the social system of mass media that makes phenomena visible or invisible, depending on structurally determined distinctions. The overall conclusion of the project is that contemporary mass media is still following the structure of the system of mass media, in particular when it comes to the approaches of mediation, despite the changes in content generation and media agents.
