- Abstract
- This study investigates whether there is a correlation between separatism and state-wide integration in multi-nation states. The study is a comparative case-study conducted on the cases of Québécois separatism in Canada and Catalan separatism in Spain. The study only takes social and political integration into consideration and no other variables are investigated. The material that the study has been conducted on is mainly Canadian and Spanish legislation on state and regional levels but also information from different institutions in the two countries.... The study only takes social and political integration into consideration and no other variables are investigated. The material that the study has been conducted on is mainly Canadian and Spanish legislation on state and regional levels but also information from different institutions in the two countries.
The Canadian state seems have done a better job of integrating the Québécois nation on a state-wide scale than the Spanish state has accomplished in the integration of the Catalan nation within Spain. The results of this study show a correlation between state-wide political and social integration and the minority nation’s desire to secede. The conclusion is that with a higher degree of state-wide integration the minority nation is less likely to pursue independence. (Less)
