This study explores two forms of oppressions facing Palestinian women in the Occupied Palestinian Territories: the Israeli Occupation and the Patriarchal Structure in their society. Two question, in accordance with the study’s purpose were of particular interest: how they experience the violence they are exposed to from the occupation and the patriarchy, and what they consider to be the constraining and enabling conditions in the struggle for gender equality. A qualitative method, in form of eight semi-structed interviews were conducted in Israel-Palestine. The findings were divided into four themes, and subsequently analyzed through Galtung’s three forms of inter-related violence, Yuval-Davis’ theories on gender and nation and scrutinized by an intersectional approach. The study finds that the women experience the violence in the occupation in similar ways but disagree on the patriarchal violence, the intersection of the two and how to face them. The conditions to struggle for gender equality during occupation are mostly viewed as constraining. (Less)
