Abstract
The Swedish school system is becoming more and more segregated and unequal. This development is, if not caused by, at least aggravated by ’the free school choice’. Although there seems to be a consensus on the negative influence it has had on segregation, the reform nevertheless sustains. The problems associated with the free school choice therefore seems to be handled within the choice-paradigm, instead of quesitoning it.

The Swedish school system is becoming more and more segregated and unequal. This development is, if not caused by, at least aggravated by ’the free school choice’. Although there seems to be a consensus on the negative influence it has had on segregation, the reform nevertheless sustains. The problems associated with the free school choice therefore seems to be handled within the choice-paradigm, instead of quesitoning it.
In my study, I have analysed a specific newly published policy document (SOU) to understand how the ambivalence is being handled. By using discursive and psychoanalytic theoretical and methodological framework this has been made possible to research. In my study I have shown how fantasy and certain chains of equivalence and difference makes it possible to deny and overlook this conflict, by the production of a thought figure of the ’involved parent’, which is created in contrast to the ’uninvolved parent’. The latter rather than the former is viewed as ’the problem’ – which affects and reduces the ways in which it is possible to understand how school choice affects segregation. (Less)
