Abstract
The aim with the current study was to attain a deeper understanding of the expressions of high competence based self-esteem (CBSE) among young adults, as well as exploring potential roots and contributing causes of CBSE. Within the frame of this retro perspective, attention was mainly paid to certain shared respectively unshared environmental factors, such as family circumstances, social relationships and school environment. To meet the purpose of the study, a qualitative design based on semi-structured interviews was chosen. However, in order to find interviewees with high CBSE, a quantitative design and a structured survey, Competence Based Self- esteem Scale (CBSE scale), was used as a first step. To meet the purpose of the study, a qualitative design based on semi-structured interviews was chosen. However, in order to find interviewees with high CBSE, a quantitative design and a structured survey, Competence Based Self- esteem Scale (CBSE scale), was used as a first step. Of the survey’s 126 respondents, six individuals with a high rating on the CBSE-scale were interviewed. The data was examined using a thematic analysis and nine themes were identified. The result showed that a majority of the interviewees had several behaviours and attitudes that are typical for individuals with high CBSE, such as perfectionism and a difficulty recognising one’s physical and mental limits. One main individual difference was whether they related their strivings for achievement to primarily positive or negative emotions. To what extent it was believed to be important to perform for one’s own cause or for the recognition of others was also something that differed among them, as well as level of performance outcome. Several potential roots and contributing causes of CBSE were identified based on the interviewees’ stories, for example a lacking parent-child relationship, peer victimization and a competitive school environment. Abstract (Swedish)
