The purpose of this paper is to examine how the social welfare committee and the court describes the youths and how the descriptions differ depending on gender. To analyze the judgments we used discourse theory, Yvonne Hirdman’s gender system theory, and Judith Butler’s performativity theory. The main results of this study show that the description of the girls’ “other socially destructive behaviour” tended to focus on mental health issues and sexual behaviour, while the description of the boys mainly focused on problems linked to criminality and violent behavior.
