Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine foster parents’ experiences of how emergency placements in foster care work and affect children. Furthermore, the study aims to shed light on how the foster care parents perceive the separation from the child’s family of origin and how the contact with the children’s biological parents has been. To fulfill the purpose of the study several qualitative and semi-structured interviews were performed in which the respondents were familiar with the subject somehow. The respondents were both couples and single people between 25 and 65 years of age. The empirical material has been analyzed with the support of ecological system theory, attachment theory, street-level bureaucracy theory, and previous research.... (More)

To fulfill the purpose of the study several qualitative and semi-structured interviews were performed in which the respondents were familiar with the subject somehow. The respondents were both couples and single people between 25 and 65 years of age. The empirical material has been analyzed with the support of ecological system theory, attachment theory, street-level bureaucracy theory, and previous research. The results show that most foster care parents found the separation from the child’s family of origin a traumatic process. The children's contact with their family of origin was more often than not having a negative impact on the children, according to the interviewees. Most respondents stated that it was demanding to meet the children’s needs, especially if the child suffered from a neuropsychiatric diagnosis. However, results indicate that this is not true for all foster care parents. Children placed in foster care at an early age find it easier to develop a secure attachment pattern to their new caregivers. Furthermore, most respondents answered that placed children have good future opportunities. Certain shortages of what the social service could provide the foster care parents with was a topic repeatedly coming up as they experienced the social workers as unavailable due to the high workload. The conclusions show that high workload and lack of resources in social services are negatively reflected on foster care parents and placed children. (Less)
