Abstract
Our theme for this bachelor’s thesis is to take a closer look at an approach used in social work that has come to create a template of sorts for how to perform daily tasks: Evidence-based practice (EBP). The broad mass of researchers and professionals in social work agree that EBP serves the common good and that the proven methods included in EBP make social work more individualized. According to Per Nilsen (2014), the original thought of EBP is found in what evidence based medicine has done for the medical world. Bergmark and Lundström (2011) and Marcus Herz (2012) however, are rather critical to whether EBP and its manual-based practice really mean that the clients are treated under the same conditions or if it is more of a discursive... Our theme for this bachelor’s thesis is to take a closer look at an approach used in social work that has come to create a template of sorts for how to perform daily tasks: Evidence-based practice (EBP). According to Per Nilsen (2014), the original thought of EBP is found in what evidence based medicine has done for the medical world. Bergmark and Lundström (2011) and Marcus Herz (2012) however, are rather critical to whether EBP and its manual-based practice really mean that the clients are treated under the same conditions or if it is more of a discursive trend that is tossed around by practitioners without them knowing what it really means. The goal of this study is to, through a qualitative interview study, find out what the professionals working in residential care homes for children and young persons (HVB) have to say about EBP. In the results, we found that the professionals agreed that HVB is not a perfect effort in a utopian world, but that it is the best solution to offer with what is currently available. The study also showed that the goal of reaching ”propitious care” as the law demands, is not reached in perfect unison with the guidelines of EBP. Furthermore, there is also a great ambiguity as to what it means to work according to EBP, and many cases showed that EBP is not something that is reflected upon in the daily work as a professional caretaker. The conclusion of the study is that the EBP process itself has become a term used in HVB because the National Board of Health and Welfare (2019) demands it and that it is in need of further development to reach its goals. Furthermore, the study shows that the professionals in the field of HVB are uncertain about what EBP is. (Less)
