children's participation in child care investigations within the social services. The purpose of our study was to investigate how social workers work with
children's participation in child care investigations within the social services. We also wanted to find out if there has been any changes that have taken place as a result of the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” becoming law and if this in turn has had any affect on the children's participation. This is a qualitative study that is based on semi-structured interviews with eight social workers who work with children at the social services in several municipalities in Sweden. With the help of previous research within the area of expertise and Hart's theory named The ladder of participation, Shier’s participation model and also the theory of streetlevel bureaucracy by Lipsky the empirical data was analysed to obtain a result.The most relevant findings was that the social workers are using several strategies and instruments to provide for the children's right to participation. It was also demonstrated that several factors limit children’s participation. One factor that was shown was the strong rights of the parents compared to those of the children. Other factors were the children’s need of protection, which counteract their influence to participate and the fact that their characteristics also affect their participation in the child care investigations. The analysis implied that the becoming of the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” has as of yet not led to any remarkable changes within the organizations that our interviewees are active in. The lack of changes is explained by the extent to which the organizations have chosen to implement new methods. (Less)
