Abstract
This study in ethnology is about birdwatching and birders through a female perspective. How female birders develop their skills through participation in an all-female network. These networks are designed specifically to cater and push women to take on higher positions of power in birder societies. The networks also offer a sense of community and a non-competitive form of birdwatching. In this study I focus on the female participation and what it has done for the birder community. How the style of birdwatching has formed over the years and how the birder-climate has changed since the networks came into play. What made the network form in the first place? What needed to change in the community? How was female participation valued and how... (More)

How the style of birdwatching has formed over the years and how the birder-climate has changed since the networks came into play. What made the network form in the first place? What needed to change in the community? How was female participation valued and how does it look today? Using feminist theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts such as cultural and social capital and symbolic violence, I concluded that the networks did in fact create a safe space for female participation. It gave women the space they needed and the ability to use their voice to take agency over their performance in the world of birdwatching. (Less)
