Abstract
The aim of this study is to hermeneutically understand and critically assess manifestations and impacts of certain aspects of the phenomenon of patriarchal gender norms. Seeing that gender norms are the sustaining component of the greater and oppressing gender system of patriarchy, this study is relevant in relation to the broader analysis and understanding of patriarchy and its influences. By using the methodology of Critical Narrative Analysis, this study is a hermeneutic phenomenologically informed narrative analysis based on semi- structured interviews as the collected material. Through narratives of lived experiences this study particularly analyses how female university students in Tehran understand patriarchal gender norms... (More)
The aim of this study is to hermeneutically understand and critically assess manifestations and impacts of certain aspects of the phenomenon of patriarchal gender norms. Through narratives of lived experiences this study particularly analyses how female university students in Tehran understand patriarchal gender norms concerning the aspects of appearance, comportment and family life in Iran. The findings from this study overall show how the investigated aspects of the phenomenon of patriarchal gender norms in the narratives manifest and appear to the participants in problematic ways. Based on these findings and by including theoretical ideas of Simone de Beauvoir and Judith Butler, this study argues how the participants become women, particularly through the investigated aspects of patriarchal gender norms. Furthermore, this study argues that patriarchal gender norms are structurally limiting and oppressing women, including the participants. The main argument of this study is thus that being, through becoming, a woman is a collective problem for women, which is in need of a collective solution. This study further suggests the collective solution to involve critical thinking to generate effective activism to challenge and change gender norms, the gender system of patriarchy, and ultimately the collective problem of being, through becoming, a woman.
